Should you Jailbreak?

If you are a jailbreak virgin, you might be unsure about jailbreaking your new and delicious Iphone 4. Here are some facts, and what to
expect when jailbreaking.

So here's is what you need to know before you take the plunge.
  • Is it legal?
Yes. The US made it legal this year. Letting all rejoice in the freedom to mod your phone.
  • Will it void my warrenty?
Absolutely. Apple isn't too fond of you changing their products, so be weary and keep the phone safe. Luckily if you buy one before September this year, you get a free case! so grab that goodie while you can.
  • Is it a complicated process?
Thanks to the Dev Team, not at all. With the new Iphone 4 jailbreak you can actually visit jailbreakme.com straight from your phone and it will prompt you to download. It's that easy!

  • Can I revert to Apples OS
Yes. At anytime if you feel that OS 4 is for you, just plug it right into Itunes and hit restore.

  • Will jailbreaking keep my apps? And do they properly after?
This is a BIG question I had for myself. Yes it keeps you apps and as far as I know, the programs work fine. Although, there might be a few that may not work.

So there you have the questions everyone's wondering about. Now let me tell you a little bit about what you get.

Cydia is the default "App Store". There's a load of mods and such that you can install to your phone. That is simple. Just press install and it will open a run-like window, installing the script/program.

I find Cydia itself to be a little less organized than the App Store. It's kind of hard to find something you'd like and there are not a lot of icons in the store to depict the theme of the app. It's also somewhat slow in loading, and the descriptions are short, sometimes leaving you with questions of what your actually installing. Other than that, I have no big problems with it. There are other stores available, but I have not gone through to try them yet.

What do I like/love about jailbreaking? Well I'm glad you asked!

For one, I love that now I can add simple tweaks that just make my phone more pleasurable to use. For example, I downloaded a script that could add another slot in my home deck, which is nice if your into organizing and have more than four fave apps.

And the coolest thing of all? Take a gander at that beauty! You can emulate video games. This app is called n64iphone and although it doesn't brag smooth game play, it is a nice nostalgic touch.

If you are thinking of getting that app prepare to get yourself DiskAid. It claims you can download the ROMs from your iphone but the download never shows up. So all you have to do is download it on your computer and place it in the directory it belongs to. (you'll see the directory url when you open n64iphone in the top tab)

My conclusion to the iphone 4 jailbreak is only jailbreak if you absolutely have to have it. Alas there is still no way to use your iphone as a universal hard drive. You would need special programs on every computer you want to transfer files between. There's not a whole lot you can mod anyway now that the OS 4 has just about everything that made jailbreak so popular.

If you have any questions I missed in this discussion please feel free to leave a comment and I shall answer it!

Happy Jailbreaking!
